We're recruiting a Postdoc or PhD student

PostDoc or PhD position available on "Root-bacterial interactions" in Plant Environmental Signalling & Development

Description

Utilizing beneficial bacteria to control plant root ethylene signalling, development and stress resilience

A PostDoc or PhD position is available in the Plant Environmental Signalling & Development lab led by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Sjon Hartman to investigate how plants use ethylene-modulating bacteria to control root development and acclimation to environmental stress. The successful candidate will use various synthetic bacterial communities that have the ability to alter ethylene signaling in plants to promote plant growth, development and stress resilience (flooding, drought, soil compaction) in the model plant species Arabidopsis and several crop species. They will use a combination of genetics, molecular biology and cell biology techniques to unravel the underlying mechanisms. Ultimately, the candidate will make steps to translate the experimental findings towards non-sterile soil conditions and be involved in field trials in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in collaboration with local German farmer consortium partners.

The vacancy

The full time position is available immediately (but negotiable) until December 2027. The salary level is E13 (65% for PhD students). The initial application deadline is 15.01.2025. Interviews will start soon after.

We offer

·       An open, inclusive, supportive and scientifically vibrant atmosphere in a growing international team working in modern laboratories with access to state-of-the-art imaging platforms and plant growth facilities

·       Optional (for PhD candidates) integration into the Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine (SGBM) and CIBSS Excellence Cluster

·       Integration and collaboration within the Freiburg Molecular Plant Science DOMPS community

·       Daily support by a lab technician and student helper

Requirements

·       For postdoctoral applicants, a formal pre-requisite is a doctoral thesis/PhD and academic university degree. For doctoral (PhD) applicants, a MSc in biological sciences is required

·       Extensive knowledge and proven expertise in plant microbiology / microbiome research

·       Advanced practical experience in molecular biology, cell biology and genetics related to plant microbiology

·       Fluent oral and written English communication skills is a must. Knowledge of German is an asset to enhance collaboration with the consortium farmer partners

·       Motivation to actively engage and collaborate within our research team and  community

·       The ability to move to Freiburg and start the position as soon as possible (flexibility for exceptionally fitting candidates is possible)

Application

When applying please send a 1-2 page motivation letter, a CV including a publication list, and the contact details of at least two references in a single PDF document to johannes.hartman@biologie.uni-freiburg.de.

Further Information

The Plant Environmental Signalling & Development lab opened on the 1st of January 2022 at University of Freiburg, and largely focuses their efforts on molecular plant signalling biology under adverse environmental conditions. We strongly encourage applicants to familiarize themselves with the lab’s past and ongoing research topics. Further information about the Plant Environmental Signalling & Development lab can be found at: https://www.hartman-plantlab.com/ or by contacting Sjon Hartman directly.

Please note that applications that are too generic and unspecific, or are not following the application guidelines may not be considered and answered.
